Making a career change can feel exciting, intimidating, and a downright overwhelming—all at the same time. Whether you’re looking for more fulfillment, better pay, or a healthier work-life balance, the journey starts with taking that first step.

For many, a career change comes with unique challenges: navigating systemic barriers, balancing personal responsibilities, or even simply having the confidence to start over. But here’s the good news: You’re not alone, and it’s never too late to chase your dreams.

Here are three actionable first steps to help you start your career change journey with clarity and confidence.

1. Reflect on What You Want (and Why)

Before making any big changes, take the time to reflect. What are you seeking in your next career? Is it more flexibility, greater purpose, or a chance to pursue your passions? Explore what are your current need and work values. Understanding your “why” will guide your decisions and keep you focused, so you don’t fall into the trap of choosing something out of comfort rather than really obtaining what you want.

I’m currently working with a client who is skilled in many areas but is seeking a career change. However, she wasn’t sure where to begin. After conducting an assessment of her goals, interests and skills, it helped us have a better understanding of what she wanted to do and who she wanted to do it for.

Actionable Tip:

Set aside time to journal and meditate on these questions:

  • What energizes me at work?

  • What do I value most for my career?

  • What would I do if I weren’t afraid to fail? What would I do even if I didn’t get paid to do it?

  • What do I need now that I’m not receiving from my current role?

2. Research and Reskill

Once you’ve identified your desired career path, it’s time to research what skills, certifications, or experience you’ll need to make the leap. Be sure to review current job descriptions to see what employers in the market are looking for. Understand the difference between required skills/experiences versus preferred. There is no perfect candidate out there, so don’t let fear talk you out of applying for roles that you are skilled to do and have transferable skills and knowledge that you can apply.

Once you complete your research, you have a stronger understanding of any online courses, workshops, trainings, or certifications that can help you either reskill or upskill your current knowledge. I also recommend that you reach out to people already in the field to ask them their advice, their experience, and expectations for the field. You will gain so much honest and real advice to use to help you craft your plan forward.

Actionable Tip:

  • Use platforms like LinkedIn Learning or Coursera to explore courses in your chosen field.

  • Reach out to new contacts in the field and join networking groups to gain insider advice.

3. Take a Small, Brave Step (React)

The idea of a career change can feel daunting, but progress starts with a single step. Maybe it’s updating your resume, reaching out to a recruiter, or attending a networking event. Each action builds momentum.

What has helped me push past my fears of starting is remembering my “why”. Your “why” should motivate you to do the hard things to get you to where you want to be. I also keep of list of my capabilities and accomplishments to build up my courage. You know more than anyone your abilities - abilities to learn, to pivot, to adapt and much more!

Your fear is likely a sign that you are trying something new and fear rejection, and that’s okay. Just don’t let it stop you. Instead, reframe your fear to something like this, ‘I’m trying something new and am not an expert YET but will be’. And if you receive a rejection, know that it’s a REDIRECTION for you to spend time in areas and with others who are going to assist you and move you forward.

Actionable Tip:

Commit to one small step this week that aligns with your career goals. You’ll be amazed at how far one action can take you.
